ERASED MURALS > Vinatown Dragon

The mural was painted in 2015 for the HUE Mural Festival and was created by looking at a vanished downtown that had once been home to many Vietnamese and Chinese businesses. The area, known as Vinatown had all manner of Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants and has since been relegated to the outer loop area near Bellaire & Gulfton. The image is sourced from a Vietnamese temple and acts as a marker for an erased history. Soon this mural will also be erased as the owner of the bar does not find it adds value to his bar and wants to find something inexpensive to paint over it. In my view these are typical of the trials involved when it comes to the politics of who gets to decide what goes onto the landscape.
